My love for animals

I grew up with 6 guard dogs in Suriname and I loved them with all my heart.
They would protect me and were loyal to me.

After my father passed away, we had to move to a smaller space and we couldn’t keep dogs around anymore.
As a child, I was devastated and didn’t understand why I had to give away my best friends.
My mother permitted me to get a cat since they were smaller and less maintenance.
It was a new experience for me, cats are so different from dogs.
I had to forget everything I knew about dogs and learn how to interact with cats.
It was something about their majestic aura that made me fall in love with cats.
We started with one cat, then I rescued more cats from the streets
and at some point we ended up with 3 adults cats and 5 kittens.
I felt like it was my purpose to help these animals, I felt so sad that they didn’t have a home.
After moving to Houston to attend college, I felt so lonely without a cat.
On Christmas I decided that I’m going to adopt a cat as a Christmas present for myself.

My First Rescue in Houston

It was love at first sight. We locked eyes and she warmed up to me immediately.
That one, she is the one coming home with me.
Her name was Beans, but I thought it undermined her beauty.
I gave her a new name: Zoe.
I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect cat.

The Start of Becky Baking

For the first time in my life, I decided to turn on the oven and bake something.
My fridge had some blueberries and remembered these delicious blueberry muffins I once had in New York.
I Googled a recipe and the end result came out looking exactly what I wanted.
Even my mother complimented my creation.
I don’t have much of a sweet tooth so I brought 2 dozens of blueberry muffins to work with me the next day.
It was a hit, everybody loved them. I felt this sense of satisfaction that I’ve never felt before.
I’ve awaken this unknown passion that was always inside of me, I loved doing it.
From there on, I would always bake something on my day off to bring to work or friends the next day. It made me so happy to see their happy faces after they take a bite.
I would make traditional recipes that mainstream bakeries don’t make anymore and I was always told that my sweets reminded them of their childhood, that was my goal.
I want people to remember the good times when they eat my creations, I want them to feel happy.
